30 Best Cars Family Top

30 Best Cars Family Top

The best family cars of the last couple of years aren't actually cars, as has become clear from the selection process. They are actually minivans, crossovers, and SUVs. The fact that a family of four or five can fit in a large automobile or even a midsize one does not negate this possibility. Crossovers, SUVs, and minivans, on the other hand, come out on top when you take into account space, comfort, safety, technology, cargo capacity, and other criteria.

Additionally, towing capacity is frequently included in cargo capacity. For a large family, bringing along a trailer filled with gear or camping supplies can significantly improve the trip. Sedans cannot be hauled or towed by larger crossovers and SUVs.

Since their tasks are straightforward, selecting a work truck or a weekend track toy is not too difficult. On the other hand, choosing the ideal family car requires a delicate balancing act between comfort and features to meet a variety of needs. This is particularly true if you choose one car to satisfy the needs of your complete family.

Best new cars 2022 and 2023 — Elementor

It's crucial that you choose a vehicle that is roomy, capable, and safe if your family includes working parents, a soccer player, and a teenager who just finished driver's ed. For their daily commute, parents will require a comfortable car, athletes will need lots of room for their equipment, and novice drivers can benefit greatly from safety features.

Finding the cars and SUVs that fit all of those criteria is difficult, so we looked through nearly 100 vehicles in nine categories to determine which were the best. This list is an excellent place to start if you're in the market and looking for your new vehicle. Continue reading to discover more about our Best Cars for Families 2022 winners.

Safety
Safety should be the main priority when choosing a family hauler, and for most automobile buyers, it is. Safety is the top factor for 65% of automobile buyers, according to Statista, a source of market and consumer statistics. In comparison to other car-buying factors, that percentage is higher. For that shopping expressly for a family car, it's definitely significantly higher.

Nowadays, cars are more secure than ever. Antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, rearview cameras, tire-pressure monitors, and other features are now required by law for all new vehicles. An astounding amount of cutting-edge safety and driver assistance technologies are either standard or available on most modern models, in large part due to the search for self-driving cars.

Any family vehicle you are thinking about should meet the strict requirements of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Since 2013, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has put new models through a series of crash testing. The test results for the majority of cars go back almost ten years, despite the fact that these tests have changed and increased in number over time.

The IIHS Test
The IIHS is a non-profit trade association that receives funding from motor insurance providers. Six crash tests are the main source of its safety conclusions. As follows:

  • frontal driver-side tiny overlap
  • front passenger-side overlap
  • moderate front overlap
  • Side
  • Roof durability
  • seating and head restraints

The top crash-test rating from the IIHS is "Good," which is followed by "Acceptable," "Marginal," and "Poor." A vehicle must receive six out of six "Good" ratings to be included on this list.

The IIHS also bestows the Top Safety Pick (TSP) or Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) certification on the best-performing automobiles each year. They don't only base their honors on a flawless six-for-six Good performance. A vehicle must also perform exceptionally well in other evaluation categories, such as vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, headlamp efficiency, and so forth, to make the TSP or TSP+ list. The scoring is Superior, Advanced, and Basic in these domains. The majority of our selections on this list received TSP or TSP+ honors.

Value
Finding the car with the greatest number of qualities and features you want at the lowest price is known as getting the most "bang for your buck." However, "cost" is the key word because it encompasses much more than just the transaction price.

Ownership costs are definitely influenced by the purchase price and the interest rate of the auto loan, but there are other elements that come into play during the course of ownership. For instance, depreciation, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repair costs all go into the cost of ownership (How many books value your car loses from purchase until you sell it.). Our starting point is the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price in order to estimate a rough comparative cost of ownership for the choices on this list.

Dependability and Strength
Durability and dependability are discussed together with value. They are taken into account when calculating a car's 5-Year Cost to Own as well as its maintenance costs and resale value. However, reliability and durability merit closer investigation in the spirit of wanting to move your family about in a secure atmosphere.

The reliability of a new car is determined by gathering information from previous model years and carefully analyzing it by the valuation specialists at Kelley Blue Book. Kelley Blue Book gathers a tonne of information on how models hold up each year. This information is crucial when determining used car values. When creating our "10 Best" lists, we draw from this wealth of knowledge.

The cost of ownership and comfort of mind benefit equally from trouble-free ownership. Not just those looking for new cars can say this.

Driving Practice
While getting your family there in comfort and safety is the main goal, a vehicle's driving habits play a significant role in the ownership experience. Our selections are chosen for their ease of use, the accuracy of the steering, the feel of the brake and accelerator pedals, and general visibility. Some of these cars can be extremely big, which makes parking and using them in towns difficult. Many have features that increase your confidence while driving, such as automated braking, pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring.

Convenience and comfort
A decent family vehicle provides more than simply a spacious interior. The chairs ought to be cozy. The way the seats are arranged is crucial. What types of seats are available in the second row? Fore and aft adjustments are made? Is it simple to get to the third row?

Information and entertainment systems should function without a hitch and provide a wide range of connectivity options, such as Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Sliding doors and power liftgates make it easier to load and unload passengers and their belongings. All of these problems can only be solved by getting under the car and exploring it from the inside out.

Carrying capacity
With all the gear and flotsam a troupe assembles, a family frequently resembles a traveling circus when traveling almost anywhere. This is something that every parent has gone through at some point. The load room and flexibility that are offered by our Best Family Cars selections are highly valued. We check things like how easily the rear seats fold down and if they lie flat, as well as the height of the back lift-over. Are there additional cubbies or below-floor storage that offer more capacity and convenience?

Baby Seats
Family cars should always prioritize child safety seats. The following inquiries must be made of yourself when assessing infant and toddler seating options:

  • Is there adequate room for the seat and the youngster between the front and back seats?
  • When there are two child safety seats in the second row, how simple is it to enter the third row?
  • Are there adequate space and LATCH tethers for every seat you require?
  • How easy are the LATCH mounting locations to reach?

Although every vehicle on our list is among the best in its category, you might want to shop with your present seats in tow.

The ease of use of a vehicle's LATCH system is one of the factors considered by the IIHS when bestowing its yearly TSP and TSP+ awards. Scroll down the page for the vehicle to see the IIHS LATCH score when you use the IIHS website for your own research.

Testing Techniques
The editorial team at Kelley Blue Book tests new automobiles, trucks, and SUVs constantly throughout the year. Both current market models and brand-new automobiles are assessed by the crew. As part of the procedure, we bring a lot of these automobiles to our headquarters. Parents of toddlers to young adults are among the members of our workforce. This amount of knowledge was crucial in helping us choose the Best Family Cars for 2022.

The Scene
We chose a number of minivans and 2- and 3-row SUVs that are great at accommodating both small and large families' demands. Additionally, our selections offer great fuel efficiency, minimal running expenses, and high safety standards at competitive pricing. All of the models on this list are either IIHS TSP/TSP+ vehicles, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 5-Star vehicles, or have received the highest honors from both organizations based on the most recent ratings.

Family-friendly SUVs

Acura MDX

Friendliness to Families
Can't decide between center row benches and captain's chairs? The middle seat in the center row slides out when you don't need it, giving you the best of both worlds. Additionally, the multimedia system has features like Cabin Talk and Social Playlist that were created specifically for the Odyssey, making it simple to involve everyone in conversation and DJing. The third row has no LATCH anchors, although the middle row has three.

$48,000 and more; 22 MPG is predicted for a 290 horsepower V6 engine

Volvo XC90 Recharge

Friendliness to Families
Volvo is a company noted for its strict safety design and top-notch technological features. Customers have a choice of three-seat benches or captain's chairs in the center row of the interior. Two people can fit in the third row, which is accessed by sliding and tilting middle-row seats. It's easy to set car seats because each of the three centre-row seats may slide forward and back separately. The center row has an option for a built-in booster seat, and the two seats on either side have LATCH systems, but there isn't one in the third row.

$455 horsepower 4-cylinder turbo engine with a PHEV electric system projected to get up to 35 miles of electric range and 27 MPG; $64,800+ before tax incentives (gas only)

Kia Carnival

Kia Carnival is the best new minivan.

Friendliness to Families
It is simple to enter and exit the third-row thanks to sliding doors and center-row seats that slide and fold. There are two in each of the outboard third-row seats and three in the center row (with a bench seat), for a total of five LATCH systems. A back seat reminder, six USB charging ports, and a safe exit assist, which prevents the passenger doors from opening while a car is approaching, were also included by Kia (including two in the third row).

$32,300 and above; 290 horsepower V6 engine with 22 MPG estimates

2022 Toyota Sienna

Comfortable Interior
Here are the features of a new minivan that are most important. Eight people can sit in the LE and XLE with front drive, while only seven people can fit in the other models in the lineup. All three rows have more than enough legroom, with the second row having 39.9 inches and the third having 38.7 inches.

Window coverings for the second row are included as standard. The third-row seats may split in half and then be stowed.

Toyota hasn't always been known for its exceptionally silent cabins, but with the 2017 Sienna, the firm has upped its soundproofing game.

The standard 9-inch infotainment touchscreen is a reasonable size up front even though it isn't the biggest of its kind. The centre console features a small storage area behind it for things like handbags and other small items.

When all the seats are in place, the cargo space increases from 33.5 cubic feet to 101 cubic feet behind the front row.

Starting Price: $34,710

Nissan Pathfinder

Friendliness to Families
This SUV stands out from others in its class thanks to its eight seats. Customers can select "peacemakers," or center row captains seats, which allow passengers extra privacy and visibility (available on SV, SL, and Platinum grades). Surfaces, floor mats, and seating are all simple to clean. Both the third-row driver's side seat and the outboard seats in the center row have LATCH attachments.

$34,640 and more; 284 hp V6 engine predicted to achieve 23 MPG

2022 Toyota Highlander

Comfortable Interior
The Toyota Highlander's interior features a lovely design that gives it a more upscale appearance than its price may imply. Not only does it have a good appearance, but the controls are simple to use and were created with ergonomics in mind. With options like leather seats, a head-up display, JBL premium audio, and more, it becomes nicer as you move up the model range.

Although the Highlander's regular three rows of seating can accommodate up to eight passengers, the third row is somewhat small. Legroom is extremely limited, and the middle seat in the third row is a choke point. If you have tall passengers in the third row regularly, you’ll want to seek elsewhere. However, the first two rows of seats are fairly roomy, and we really like the second-row captain's chairs, which are an option.

For its class, the Highlander's cargo space is approximately average. The amount of cargo space increases naturally as additional back seats can be folded down; the maximum amount is 84.3 cubic feet.

Starting Price: $35,405

2022 Kia Telluride

Interior Comfort The third row of the 2022 Telluride SUV can accommodate adults of average size, which gives you an indication of how roomy it is. Easy access to the seats and a lot of headroom is provided by the tall roof. In a stadium-like arrangement, each row is a little higher than the one in front.

Comfortable seats, elegant materials, and an uptown/simplified aesthetic characterize the interior design. especially with the new Kia logo on the steering wheel.

This year, Driver Talk becomes required. The driver's voice is fed through the rear speakers via this convenient feature, saving parents from having to yell at their children. Quiet Mode (also a recent feature), which turns off the rear speakers while the tiny darlings are sleeping, nevertheless enables people in the front to listen to their preferred music source at a low volume.

Behind the third row, there are 21 cubic feet of luggage space. Not at all awful. The largest space behind the front seats is 87 cubic feet, and folding down the last row makes 46 cubic feet available.

Starting Price: $33,090

Volkswagen Atlas

Friendliness to Families
Even with a car seat installed, second-row seats can slide and tilt to provide access to the third row (using the LATCH system, not a seat belt). The third row has no LATCH systems, whereas the central row has three.

$34,335 and more; a 4-cylinder engine rated at 236 horsepower should return 23 MPG

2022 Hyundai Palisade

Comfortable Interior
The Hyundai Palisade's interior is one of its strongest points. In this class, several 3-row SUVs have compromised cargo capacity or third-row seating that is too small. The Palisade is a midsize SUV with third-row seats suitable for adults and a sizable amount of load room.

Thanks to the one-touch sliding second-row seats on both sides, accessing the third row is similarly simple. Standard seating accommodates up to eight people, however, the second-row captain's chairs reduce that number to seven.

The Palisade's interior boasts a sleek and appealing appearance. In the higher trims, like Nappa leather in the Limited model, the materials can become more premium, and the controls are thoughtfully put out. Quilted leather and a faux suede headliner are added to the inside with calligraphy trim. There are enough soft-touch materials, even in the base trims, to give this SUV a finer feel than its pricing would imply.

Starting Price: $33,350

2022 Honda Pilot

Comfortable Interior
The 2022 Pilot is roomy and comfortable, with seating for eight in the Sport and EX-L trims, seven or eight in the Touring trim, and seven in the Elite and Black Edition variants. Long road journeys are also acceptable because of how peaceful and civilized it is. That's when those 15 cup holders start to get used more frequently.

The rear legroom in the second row is more than sufficient at 38.4 inches. Naturally, smaller and more flexible family members should sit in the third row, but 31.9 inches of back legroom isn't awful.

This third row of seats may be divided in half and folded flat. A maximum of 109.2 cubic feet of cargo space is available, ranging from 16.5 cubic feet.

Starting Price: $37,580

Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Friendliness to Families
The third row, which has enough for six or seven people, is spacious and comfortable, even for tall individuals, and the second-row seats slide and tilt for simple access. Jeep added removable carpets, USB ports for each passenger, and cup holders with phone holders. The third row has no LATCHes, whereas the central row has three.

$22 MPG with a 290 horsepower V6 engine; price over $39,000

Subaru Ascent

Friendliness to Families
It turns out that everything Subaru anticipated—owners who enjoy spending a lot of time outside, those who reside in areas with "mud season," and those who have dogs—works well for families as well. This automobile is comfy and well-appointed, especially in the top-tier Touring variant ($45,945), which is also long-lasting and simple to clean. The center row has outboard LATCHes, and a set is located in the third row on the driver's side.

$32,795 and above; estimated 22 MPG for a 4-cylinder turbo engine with 260 horsepower.

Mazda CX-9

Friendliness to Families
Access to the third row is made simpler by using the captain's chairs option, which has seating for 6 (with captains chairs) or 7 (with a center row bench). When child passenger seats are fitted in the outboard position, access to the third row requires folding the center row seats forward. For some families, the hand-in-glove design may seem less spacious. The center outboard seats have two LATCH systems, however, the third row has none.

$35,630 and above; a 4-cylinder turbo engine rated at 227 horsepower and 23 MPG

2022 Honda Odyssey

Comfortable Interior
Does the 2022 Odyssey seat seven or eight people? According to the trim. The base LX has room for seven passengers. The remaining range will require eight. Even in the third row, there is plenty of room for heads and legs. All of the seats are cosy. There are 15 cup holders in all.

The cabin is also extremely adaptable, with seats that can be moved, removed, or folded. However, it can be difficult to remove the second-row seats. The range of available cargo space is 32.8 to 158 cubic feet.

Having a concave mirror installed as standard makes it simple to keep an eye on the passengers. The last Touring trim, which also has an in-car communications system, is where the CabinWatch camera is located.

Starting Price: $33,040

Chevrolet Equinox

Friendliness to Families
This SUV can accommodate both passengers and equipment thanks to fold-flat rear seats and generous load capacity. Plenty of legroom and two LATCH seats are available for the installation of car seats (nearly 40").

$25,800 and above; 170 hp, 4-cylinder turbo engine predicted to achieve 27 MPG

2022 Ford Expedition

Comfortable Interior
The number of beverage holders remains constant at 15, regardless of whether the various Expedition 2022 trims have extended leather interiors or extended cloth interiors, two rows of seating or three, second-row bench seats, or captain's chairs.

Which provides some insight into the Expedition's cabin's size. Going from the driver's seat around to the cargo area is a little bit of an adventure in and of itself, especially with a Max version.

A new infotainment touchscreen that is standard in the two top models and optional in the middle of the range complements this roomy interior. It is vertically orientated and 15.5 inches across, which is as big as they come outside of a Tesla.

Eight is the maximum number of seats. The base XL is a 5-seater, but the captain's chairs in the second row make it seven. No matter, if it's a Max or not, the second and third rows, have 42.6 and 40.9 inches of legroom each, so even tall adults will fit comfortably in the back seats.

The Max has 36 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row as opposed to 20.9 in the ordinary model because to its additional length. When rows two and three are pulled down, this extends to 121.5 cubic feet (max) or 104.6 cubic feet (normal).

Starting Price: $52,080

2022 Chrysler Pacifica

Comfortable Interior
A cabin air filter that can catch 95% of particles is one of the new features of the 2022 Pacifica. That entails allergens like pollen and germs. It's a further barrier against the vast, dangerous outside world.

The Chrysler Pacifica can accommodate eight people in a basic configuration (seven with all-wheel drive), with ample room in the third row for adults of average height. The second row of the Pinnacle trim contains a couple of captain's seats, reducing the number of passengers to seven. We appreciate the basic motorized sliding side doors for ease of access and the low step-in height.

A FamCam internal camera is available to keep an eye on those in the back, and the seats are cozy. The base model still has a convex "discussion mirror" in addition to the typical rearview mirror if that is too expensive.

A generous 32.3 cubic feet of luggage space is available behind the third row of seats, and this space may grow up to a maximum of 140.5 cubic feet when the second and third rows are removed. That's still not nearly as roomy as the Honda Odyssey, though.

Starting Price: $36,245

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Friendliness to Families
Despite having two LATCH systems, this is Subaru's smallest SUV, and even though it has 36.5" of legroom, it's possible that front-seat occupants will have less legroom with child car seats fitted, especially rear-facing seats. Furthermore, a drawback for families is that the back seat lacks its own air vents.

Before-tax incentives, a 4-cylinder engine with 137 horsepower is predicted to get 35 MPG and a range of 17 miles.

2022 Toyota RAV4

Comfortable Interior
Sitting inside the cabin of the 2022 RAV4, it is difficult to believe that it is a compact crossover. Both passenger rows have plenty of head- and legroom, and when both of the 60/40 split rear seats are folded down, the cargo space increases from 37.5 to 69.8 cubic feet.

The interior also gets more luxurious as you move up the trim levels. The XLE Premium boasts imitation leather seating surfaces and a steering wheel wrapped in leather. Adventure trim has orange stitching on the upholstery, while the TRD Off-Road has red stitching. Limited includes blue ambient lighting and dark brown interior decorations. Frontal soft-touch plastics are present on all models.

Without consulting the handbook, using the infotainment system is simple enough. Our only wish is that Toyota would have provided a little more soundproofing. At motorway speeds, it becomes somewhat raucous.

Every 2022 RAV4 model now includes a locking glove compartment with LED lighting. Several switches are lit, starting with the XLE trim. Additionally, the Limited trim adds a front passenger seat with eight power adjustments.

Starting Price: $26,525

Hyundai Tucson

Friendliness to Families
This little SUV can accommodate two child passenger car seats and has two outboard LATCH sets for car seats. It has seating for 5. There is enough room in the trunk for equipment and strollers.

$25,800+; 4-cylinder turbo engine rated at 187 horsepower and up to 29 MPG

2022 Subaru Outback

Comfortable Interior
The 2022 Outback is simple to get in and out of thanks to its spacious dimensions and slightly higher riding height. It takes less leaning over than it would in a standard automobile to buckle up a toddler.

The cabin is pleasant overall. Comfortable seats and plenty of passenger room are combined with soft-touch plastics and attractive designs. The infotainment and climate controls are on the base Outback's twin 7-inch screens, but the remainder of the series has an 11.6-inch high-resolution touchscreen that is positioned vertically. This year, the center console's rear of the premium trim receives rear ventilation.

Starting Price: $27,145

Ford Mustang Mach E

Friendliness to Families
Although the Mach-E has ample legroom, its coupe-like design sacrifices some rear headroom, but the panoramic sunroof gives the interior a more open appearance. With the appropriate child car seats, purchasers may be able to put three across the backseat using the two LATCH settings.

266 horsepower from a 68kWh battery with a range of more than 247 miles; more than $43,895 before tax credits.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe

Comfortable Interior
The inside space of the Hyundai Santa Fe, a midsize 2-row crossover, is quite roomy for both people and goods. With their belongings in the back, four persons may sit comfortably because there is enough legroom and headroom. Although it has a maximum seating capacity of five, like other SUVs in its class, the back becomes somewhat crowded when all three of the back seats are occupied. Under the rear cargo floor, there is more room for cargo.

Santa Fe's interior decor is lovely. There are a few low-grade materials here and there, but the driver only comes into contact with high-grade materials. The top Calligraphy grade, which includes quilted Nappa leather seats, premium door trim, an eco-suede headliner, and extended interior accent lighting, is when things really start to get ritzy.

Starting Price: $27,400

Subaru Forester

Friendliness to Families
This is a favorite among lovers of Subaru, especially those who have children or pets, because to its easily cleanable interiors, generous cargo capacity, and roomy seats. The outboard rear seats can accommodate child car seats thanks to two sets of LATCHes.

$25,895 and above; a 4-cylinder engine rated at 182 horsepower and 29 MPG

2022 Honda CR-V

Comfortable Interior
The inside of the Honda CR-V is among the roomiest in its class. There is ample space for both freight and passengers. There has a large cargo compartment in addition to the back seats having legroom comparable to a medium sedan. When the back seats are folded down, the cargo room increases even further. The CR-V is a wonderful SUV for compact families because of its spacious cabin.

The CR-seating V's arrangement is ideal. Although you are seated higher in the driver's seat than you would be in a sedan or hatchback, you are not as high as you would be in a full-size SUV. The interior materials are quite decent for this price range, and the seats are supportive and pleasant.

Starting Price: $26,400

Buick Envision

Friendliness to Families
Although it includes two sets of LATCHes for kid passenger car seats and more back seat legroom than the 2020 model, families with rear-facing convertible car seats may find that it is insufficient. Families with children in booster seats and older might find the Envision to be preferable.

$31,500 and more; a 4-cylinder turbo engine rated at 27 MPG and 228 horsepower

Volkswagen Taos

Friendliness to Families
Families with one or two young children might benefit more from this tiny SUV. The back seats are permanent and cannot be moved forward or backward, though they can be somewhat lowered. There are USB ports and air vents in the backseat. The Taos has a lot of storage capacity for supplies and includes two sets of infant car seat LATCHes.

$23,495 and more; 158 hp, 32 mpg-equivalent 4-cylinder engine

Hyundai Ioniq 5

Friendliness to Families
Simply put, the open cabin concept is that. The centre console between the front seats can slide forward or back, the rear seats can recline, and there is plenty of storage space thanks to the flat floor. A home plug is located under the back seat, and there is plenty of cargo space. The back outboard seats have two LATCH connectors.

$44,000 and above before federal and state tax breaks; a 77.4 kWh battery produces 225 horsepower and has a 303-mile range.

Toyota Camry Hybrid

Friendliness to Families
The Camry, a mid-size sedan from Toyota, provides a tonne of passenger room for the money; it has two latches, rear air vents, and cupholders in the fold-down armrest of the centre seat.

$27,980 and above; 208 horsepower, 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain with a predicted fuel economy of 53 MPG.

Lexus ES350

Friendliness to Families
There is space inside and in the trunk of the Toyota ES, with which it shares a common platform, for children, car seats, and other equipment. However, USB outlets and soft leather upholstery will provide greater amenities for travelers in the back seats.

$41,875 and more; 302 hp V6 engine rated at 26 MPG

Nissan Maxima

Friendliness to Families
Passengers in the back seats can recline and admire the elegant leather and central armrest with cupholders. The premium trim includes heated back seats and a panoramic sunroof. Child car seats are accommodated by two outboard LATCH systems.

$37,840 and more; 300 hp V6 engine predicted to achieve 24 MPG

Subaru Legacy

Friendliness to Families
There are power outlets, armrest cupholders, and back seat air vents in this roomy cabin. LATCH connectors are available for mounting kid car seats in the outboard seats.

$23,495 and above; a 4-cylinder 182 horsepower engine expected to achieve 30 MPG

Honda Civic

Friendliness to Families
Compared to earlier models, the back seat is bigger. The outboard seats are equipped with latches.

$22,550 and above; 158 horsepower; estimated 35 MPG for a 4-cylinder engine.
